Mountain Redoubt

Geography

The Gate at the Mountain Redoubt sits, as the name suggests, high atop of jumble of peaks far from the Core Islands. The only Island that opens to the Mountain Redoubt is Darrowmar, at the far end of it’s 2.1 year cycle away from the Core.  The Gate itself is near the top of the highest local peak. The twisted octagon of black stone and its lone squat Guardian are nearly always flecked with the ubiquitous snow at that elevation. The Gate and the peak are higher than many Islands. The Redoubt itself is not one structure but a collection of smaller and partial Ancient Race ruins that cling to the slopes of the peak, some in precarious cliff-side protrusions and some on flatter terraces nearer to the tree line. There are dozens of ruins, but only a handful are inhabited permanently. Most ruins have tunnels that lead to a what seems like a larger subterranean Ancient Race ruin, but all of them are known to be sealed and inaccessible.

Surface Danger – medium

The inhabited ruins have been well fortified, and the elevation and cold seem to prevent the frequency of surface attacks, yet travelers on the mountain are still advised to take great care. Although creatures of the jungle are rarely seen, creatures endemic to those frigid heights are just as dangerous.

People and Culture

The only known permanent residents of the Mountain Redoubt are a community of Collegium and Arcanist scholars who study the seals in the subterranean tunnels. Occasionally a well provisioned team of surface explorers will take a 2 year turn in one of the ruins.  Exiled clans from Darrowmar also spend time at the Redoubt. A small and intermittent mining community pulls a few rare ores out of sparse mines on the mountain.
