Geography
The Island of Darromar is a physical patchwork of giant vertical rock pillars, often hundreds of feet high and as wide as a medium city, punctuating flat verdant grass valleys with only a few scattered treed areas. Many of the pillars contain Ancient Race ruins. The Gate is at the center of the Island in such a pillar, in the entirely of the Traverton is also wedged within.
People and Culture
Darromar’s initial settlers were Anvard Clannless but the shape of the culture was influenced heavily by a conservative strain of Rathi colonizers. In their frequent isolation from the Core they became more focused on martial prowess, and for many cycles the Island was a lawless free-for-all nightmare of petty feuds and bloody struggle. Other Islands that didn’t simply dump them over the edges began to send their violent and incorrigible criminals to Darromar. Today things have settled under a single warlord and following the rules will at least keep less-armed locals and visitors alive. The locals are famers and craftsmen, fearful of their neighbors let alone outsiders. Violence is, if not a daily occurrence, still frequently expected. The Habri mercenaries find a lot of work on Darromar.
The geography and culture make Darromar a good place for the wealthy to build isolated (well-guarded) compounds if they truly wish to be left alone, and several of these dot the Island.
Darromar also opens to an extensive mountaintop holding on the surface on the far end of its orbit, and the Arcanists and other scholars maintain a small facility in the upper reaches of the Traverton.
Local Authority
Darromar has their own version of the Rathi anax, which they call the anaxar. He and his war clan rule the Island, until he is challenged by another in ritual combat. They have the run of the place, and natives of Darromar give them gifts and respect to avoid becoming object lessons as disobedient corpses. More than a few heavily guarded compounds on Darromar are functionally off-limits to the anaxar, but everyone pays some kind of respect.
Language
Some Travit, mostly low Anvardi and an old-school Rathi dialect of Uldrathi.
Traverton
The Traverton is built within the Ancient Ruin around the Gate, which is within a vertical rock pillar. For its levels and cramped interior, it has the feel of Anvard City or the Baraki Citidel, but on a much smaller scale. Other than the immediate area around the Gate policed by the Arcanists, and the scholar-Arcanist facility on the top levels, the warren is dangerous and lawless. Visitors and traders are encouraged to come well-armed. Staying on Darromar between cycles is not advised unless travelers can stay in one of the more heavily guarded compounds and have brought gifts to the anaxar to ease their passage.
