Geography
Morayel’s terrain is comprised of hard rock that looks like it was hot and bubbling yesterday and then just solidified into sharp-edged jumbles, piled up in some places over 20 feet high. The inhospitable landscape is sparsely covered in scrubby vegetation and small pools of brackish water and is extremely difficult to navigate off the two main paths carved through the jumbled rocks. No large permanent human settlement could survive on Morayel without outside help.
People and Culture
Under an accord made by the Arcanists at the end of the Clannless Diaspora, the Magi Clan of Anvard built and maintained the Collegium of Magic on Morayel for centuries. It has since grown into its own separate institution. The Collegium is both a school for teaching incipient wizards and a regulatory body for the same - without entry into the Collegium no mage may practice higher magics or offer their services for compensation throughout the Islands. This rule is enforced by Collegium Inquisitors, backed by the Anvardi Magi Clan, and when necessary backed by the Arcanists themselves. Exceptions for some traditions remains, such as the Drop Mages of Mehujael.
Locals include servants at the Collegium and people offering services in the Hanging Village, although many establishments are run by off-Island merchants who send workers to tend to their business in Gate-to-Gate shifts. There are very few “Morayellians”, although the permanent staff at the Collegium might be called such.
Local Authority
The Anvardi Magi Clan ostensibly owns and runs the Island, although the Collegium has its own rules and predilections.
Language
Travit and a mixture of native Cradle tongues.
Traverton
Morayel’s Traverton around the Gate is restricted to stark plain warehouses for goods in transit. The Collegium is on a secluded site a few miles away. All travelers staying between Gate openings are escorted to the Hanging Village of Morayel, a small grouping of inns and kitchens that are situated exactly as they sound, suspended over an edge 2,200 ft over the Raeluna surface. Some say it is meant to keep nosy visitors in a place of uncertainty and danger and is indeed an unsettling place to wait between Gate openings. The Hanging Village is largely populated by people with business at the Collegium and merchants who need the next Gate connection.
